Umax drivers stuck in neutral

Scan(t) Win2K support

Umax customers are not happy bunnies. People have been waiting up to six months for any kind of driver support for their Umax Astra 2000U scanners to run under Windows 2000.

The good news is that there is a driver available on the UK site that will work with the 2000U, although it is designed for the 3400U.

Nick Shaw, a technical manager at Umax UK, said: "We try to give people as much information as possible, but we didn't want to make promises about delivery that we couldn't keep. We are dependent on Taiwan and the R&D out there to get drivers."

As we mentioned above, there is a driver that will work with the 2000U, but it is designed for the most up to date model. It looks like a driver specifically written for the 2000U is unlikely to materialise since the scanner predates the release of Windows 2000.

Shaw said that customers who have the 2000U, 2100U and the 2200SU scanners could download the driver for the newer 3400U model from the company's support site. Go here and click on "Current Drivers" for the download.

Shaw concluded: "We have a lot of unhappy customers out there, but we are doing the best we can." ®
