Harvard dropout Gates achieves double doctordom

In humanities, but it's just the category name...

Bill Gates has yet to complete his undergraduate work at Harvard, but he'll collect his second doctorate next month - this time in humanities from the private Rikkyo University in Tokyo. A representative of the university said that Gates had "contributed to today's computer science technology" and added that he had "given much to improve education through his private funds".

Rikkyo is in northwest Tokyo and is affiliated to the Episcopal Church of Japan. It was founded in 1874 as St. Paul's College by Bishop Williams, with only five students and a faculty of two American missionaries.

Dr Gates' previous doctorate was from the private Dutch Nijenrode University. It is not known whether he will be supporting either university financially, making the occasion pecuniae causa as well as honoris causa as it were, but this could become clearer when he makes an acceptance speech at Rikkyo next month.

Meanwhile. here's a picture of the part of the impressive Rikkyo campus where, horror of horrors, they have quite a few Macs. ®
