The IT Crowd tops BAFTA nominations with four nods

Special final episode up for award along with its three stars

The final episode of Reg-favourite TV show The IT Crowd is leading this year's BAFTA nominations with four nods.

Look up there in the right-hand corner: It's a Reg vulture!

The episode itself is up for a gong along with stars Chris O'Dowd, Richard Ayoade and Katherine Parkinson for their roles as Roy Trenneman, Maurice Moss and Jen Barber.

The show, which is set in London and helped immortalise such phrases as "Have you tried turning it off and on again?", was created by Father Ted and Black Books writer Graham Linehan and ran for four series from 2006. A fifth season was planned but was later slimmed down to a one-off special episode, which aired in September last year.

Apart from being a rib-tickling and chucklesome parody of the corporate and tech worlds, Reg central has a warm place in its heart for The IT Crowd because of the presence of a Vulture sticker on the shelf behind Moss' head on the main set. The sticker found its way there after show-runner Linehan appealed to fans to send in stuff to decorate the set and The Reg duly obliged.

Doctor Who, another show rated highly by Reg hacks, also features in the nominations, with the docudrama about its creation, An Adventure in Space and Time, in the running in the Single Drama category. The programme was commissioned as part of the 50th anniversary of the sci-fi series last year. The special anniversary episode of the show, The Day of the Doctor, doesn't feature in the regular nominations, but it is up for the publicly-voted Radio Times Audience Award, for which polls are open.

Apart from The IT Crowd, the only other TV show to get four nominations in the BAFTAs was another Channel 4 drama, the four-part miniseries Southcliffe. BBC drama The Village and ITV whodunnit Broadchurch, starring former Doctor Who actor David Tennant, got three nods each. ®
